Yes. Well. Since our trip on Sunday when we enjoyed the shenanigans of the very pink and very adorable what we now call the "Hoo-lay" sisters, we have used that word, Hoo-lay, a lot. To great hilarity. Lucy and I were shopping yesterday, and yes, several, or maybe numerous, times we "hoo-layed" to each other back and forth. Very funny. Haha.
There are sounds in the German language that just don't work for people who haven't grown up with the language. The "o-umblatt" for example. That's the "o" with the two dots over it. In the little dictionary we have, it says that to make this sound, you round your lips to say "o" but then say "e" instead. Un huh.
One of the Ubahn stops is Frederichsbau Borse, with the dots over the "o". When the conductor calls out the stop it sounds like the second word, Borse, is "Belza". BEL? Really? Ha.
So. Back to our "Hoo-lay" follies. Steve asked a German fellow at work about this mysterious word, Hoo-lay. Oh definitely, he said, that word is "Holle" (dots over "o"). Oh my......HELL!
So those little girls were saying "hell" all that time......Mama Hell and Papa Hell and little Ella Hell? That's some family.
So those loco foreigners shopping yesterday were saying "hell" all over town all day yesterday? Oh S*%#t! (That's in English).
Steve says not to worry, chances are very good we weren't saying it right anyway. I'm sure he's right. Oh phew, that's a relief!
